Dilanka Niroshan

I am currently pursuing my MSc in Earth Sciences at Memorial University of Newfoundland in the Biogeochemistry Ecosystems Research Group (BBERG). I have completed my Bachelor’s degree at the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka having specialized in Earth Sciences. My undergraduate research was based on the spatial and the temporal variation of nutrients and trace elements of Mahaweli River (Longest River in Sri Lanka). I am interested in studying the impact of nutrient enrichment, elevated temperatures, and change in land use activities on watershed organic carbon cycling. Currently I am focusing my research on dissolved organic matter (DOM) export from small boreal forest headwater watersheds and how that export is impacted by climate change. This involves assessing variation in DOM export along the NL-BELT in combination with the study of intra-annual variation in DOM exported from our experimental watershed – Pynn’s Brook. By comparing the annual DOM export in these catchments with associated forest soil DOM fluxes I will explore the process and the fate of terrestrial DOM in these forest landscapes.
